An de an, incepand cu 2005, jurnalisti din intreaga lume se intalnesc pentru a cauta cele mai bune, mai performante, mai luxoase, prietenoase cu planeta, aspectuoase si / sau potrivite pentru oras modele pe care le are de oferit industria auto.

Votarea este un proces extrem de complex, cu cei 102 membri care formeaza juriul actual al competitiei World Car of the Year selectand exclusiv masinile asamblate in cel putin 1.000, 5.000 ori 10.000 de unitati / an, in functie si de premiul pentru care concureaza fiecare model in parte, si care sunt disponibile pe cel putin doua piete importante (China, Europa, India, Japonia, Coreea de Sud, America Latina, SUA) de pe doua continente diferite intr-o anumita perioada de timp.
